Unlocking the Realities, Rewards, and Roadmaps for Expats Eyeing a Comeback

Coming Home to Ireland: Is the Grass Truly Greener?

Hey everyone!

If you've taken your skills abroad and are now thinking about coming back to Ireland, let's talk. No fluff, just straight talk: coming back home could be your next power move.

Why Return to Ireland?

1. Family First:

Missing out on family events gets old, doesn't it? Life's special moments—birthdays, weddings, baby steps—shouldn't be experienced through a screen.

2. Home Comforts:

Foreign cultures are exciting but remember how Christmas Day feels back home? That comfort of your own culture can be tough to replace for some.

3. Your Job Scene:

Ireland's job market is buzzing. From tech to finance, career opportunities are ripe for the picking for the right candidate.

4. Healthcare You Know:

Understanding your local healthcare is crucial, especially if you're thinking of having kids or looking at retirement options. It ain’t perfect though!

5. Schools You Can Trust:

If you've got kids or plan to, good schools matter. You know the Irish system and what to expect. Think commutes, support and style of education.

Straight Talk: Answering Your Concerns

1. The Fear of the Unknown:

Ireland has changed. And so have you. It's all part of the adventure.

2. Social & Family Expectations:

Be honest with your family. You're not just visiting—you're considering moving back for good. This is going to be for longer than the usual whistlestop tour of family and friends so keep that in mind.

3. Your Money Matters:

Have a house or investments abroad? Talk to an expert about how this translates back in Ireland. Yes, it's paperwork, but it's vital. Assess what you think you can spend versus what its actually going to cost and keep a practical mindset.

4. Your Day-to-Day Life:

Your new job might not offer the same perks you're used to. Or maybe you're wondering about renting a home or what areas suit your needs at this stage of life. Its worth thinking through how you might see your day to day life to be aware of challenges and blindspots.

Don’t chase the past

Renting: Do You Know the Drill?

Renting in Ireland isn't like a quick Airbnb booking. Know the rules, the fees, and the long waits. No one likes surprises here. Supply is short and tensions can be high but preparation will help.

Mind the Closing Times:

Thinking of buying? In some places, you can close on a house in a week. Not in Ireland! Our closing process takes its sweet time. Be patient and plan accordingly. Keep this in mind with moving storage, arranging transport and giving rental notice whether it be to family, friends or landlords. Its like budgeting, allow a buffer and set expectations.

5. Trust Your Gut:

People mean well with their advice, but remember, you know what's best for you. Respect their opinions, but also take charge of your own life as this is about you.

Quick Tips: Before You Pack Your Bags

1. Update Yourself: What's new in Ireland? From jobs to neighbourhoods, get the latest updates. This is better done over time and not in a frantic dash of looking up news sites or gossip columns, explore what you first think you knew and then compare to the reality.

Knowledge is power

2. Talk Money: Got assets abroad? Consult a financial advisor. Don't let currency rates or taxes catch you off guard. Also remember that what is the norm in your current part of the world may not directly apply here, so for mortgages, bonuses etc. get informed.

3. Take a Test Run: If you can, visit Ireland for a short trip. Look at places, attend job interviews, or simply catch up with old friends and family. People move on, as you did and that is not a bad thing. Oftentimes the perception of moving home is that you are back into the freeze frame of when you first left, let the past go an see what it is like now. The best is yet to come and those who you still want to see will enhance the change.

Believe in Yourself

Believe in yourself… you got this

So there you have it. You've lived abroad; you've seen the world. Now, how about rediscovering home? It's not a step back; it's your next big step forward.
